Goodbye Istanbul

Today we had only a few hours left in Istanbul before our flight to Barcelona. We finally ate at one of the little kebap shops that are everywhere – just in time, too! It’s too bad we didn’t try them earlier. We also wrapped up our shopping – ceramic cat for Cielo, domino set for Eero, t-shirt for me, and earrings (purchased secretly by me) for Alison.

After that, it was back to the apartment (which was a great setup – kids’ room, parents’ room, living room, dining room and kitchen, all tiny but functional) to get our bags and catch a cab to the surprisingly-far-away new Istanbul airport. It was about and hour in the cab and 110 Turkish Iira for the ride.

On the Spanair flight, we found that instead of a great, price-included meal, we had to buy every little thing, even soft drinks (2.5 euros). But the flight was only about half full and passed quickly, and we were in Barcelona.

The apartment we’re renting here is actually owned by the same people who rented us the Istanbul place, and is also a multiple-small-room deal, with a kitchen and laundry facilities. We went out about 9pm to get some dinner and had a great meal one block away – I had a truffle cream fettucine dish that was very good.
