Sighnaghi

Today I went and got my friends some bracelets from Georgia.  Kayla gets the green one & Elie gets the blue one.  I also bought a book of the person who was buried under the store that I bought it from.  My mommy bought herself some earrings.  She’s wearing them right now in fact.

  1. Poor St. Nino — consigned to the status of being buried under a store!

Actually, we visited the Bodbe convent of St. Nino outside of Sighnaghi. St. Nino, a woman, is one of Georgia’s patron saints, and is buried at the Bodbe church. She is credited with bringing Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century, as a 14 year old girl. It is a rich story, to be told another time. “Nino” is as common a girl’s name in Georgia as “Maria” is in many Roman Catholic countries.

The nuns support the convent by selling shrine cards, handicrafts and enamel jewelry.
