The Wall

Cielo is now addicted to climbing stairs. It wasn't entirely due to the wall, but it didn't help.

One confusing thing about Beijing, after our experience in Shanghai, is that there are more people who speak English (other than just "hello!"). For example, vendors quote prices in dollars instead of RMB, which really never happens in Shanghai.

In one section of the wall, there was a woman sitting with a couple of coolers, selling stuff. At first it wasn't clear what she was selling, then after quizzing her in Chinese, we realized she had been saying "cold water and beer". But how did she get these heavy coolers up to this very high section of the wall? Answer: donkey power. This little guy was sitting on the inside part of the wall, right next to an access staircase for Chinese defenders.

Naturally, when we realized cold beer was available, we stopped and had lunch.

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't climb the Great Wall for at least 15 minutes after eating, but we went up to the top of one of the watchtowers anyway.
